Passing of Retired Deputy Chief Bob “Lefty” Green

Passing of Retired Deputy Chief Bob “Lefty” Green

It is with a sad and heavy heart that I inform you of the passing of Bob “Lefty” Green at home on Sunday, June 1, 2014. Bob was 92 years old.

Bob served as a Medic in the Army Air Corps for three years, eventually promoting to Sergeant before being honorably discharged.  He served 40 years in the fire service at the ranks of Firefighter, Forest Firefighter Foreman (Fire Captain), Assistant State Forest Ranger (Battalion Chief), Associate Forest Ranger (Division Chief), State Forest Ranger II (Division Chief), and State Forest Ranger III (Deputy Chief), before retiring in 1978.

Bob was instrumental in forming our first inmate camp training center(Susanville Conservation Center), and in providing foundational program work in the Local Government Cooperative Fire Protection Program.  He also played a key role in partnering with the California Conservation Corp to establish their Fire Center Program.

Bob leaves behind his wife (Mary), a daughter (Claudia), and three sons (Rich, Bob, and Jerry), two of whom also served long careers in CAL FIRE.  Two of his eight grandchildren carried the CAL FIRE torch as well – one of whom just promoted to Fire Apparatus Engineer.  Additionally, he leaves eight great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson.  Clearly, he has left a legacy that will continue to benefit CAL FIRE for years to come.

A Celebration of Bob’s Life has been scheduled.  All uniformed personnel should wear Class A Uniforms.
