The Damien Pereira Recovery Fund is established for CAL FIRE Firefighter Damien Pereira and his family after Damien was critically injured during a wildland fire; Pereira was struck and trapped beneath an 18” limb of a larger branch that fell from an oak tree with no warning.
Pereira, age 25, received life threatening injuries to his spine, lungs and upper body and was flown to an area Trauma Center where he underwent two extensive surgeries to decompress, stabilize and remove damaged vertebrae. Damien remains hospitalized and will need extensive rehabilitation due to paralysis.
Damien is married and has a two year old son. Firefighting is more than a career to Pereira having wanted to be a Firefighter since he was a young boy. With local rehab not an option, Pereira and his family won’t spend time together on a normal schedule. Hardships will be both financial and emotional as Damien’s wife will reduce her work hours to care for her husband. The Damien Pereira Recovery Fund will assist the Pereira family with the financial challenges they face during extended rehab The Pereira’s reside in San Luis Obispo, California.
