Dale was raised and educated in Watsonville. After high school he joined the Navy during the Korean Conflict and served in Japan and Oregon. He was a bosun’s mate operating small boats. After honorable discharge, Dale worked as a logger in the Santa Cruz mountains, until he went to work for the Department of Forestry as a Heavy Fire Equipment Operator. Later he promoted to Forestry Equipment Manager and remained in this position until his retirement in 1988. In addition to working for CDF, Dale and wife Mary and his daughter Belinda and son Guy raised Christmas trees on their farm in Morgan Hill. Upon retiring, Dale moved to Lakeview, Oregon and purchased a ranch on which he raised hay and cattle. Dale was well liked and respected by his co-workers. He assisted in the bulldozer tests periodically held at Camp Hunter Liggett. After the Lexington fire in 1985, Dale was put in charge of the CDF rehabilitation efforts made to clean up and restore the area damaged by the fire. He had a great sense of humor and was a pleasure to work with. Four grandchildren who Dale cared for deeply also survive.
