Passing of Boyd Newby

Retired RRU Battalion Chief 3114, Boyd Newby passed away peacefully this morning at approximately 5:08 am with family by his side.  

Battalion Chief Boyd Newby started his CAL FIRE career in the San Bernardino Ranger Unit during the summer of 1962 as a Seasonal Firefighter assigned to the San Bernardino Headquarters Station. During this time BC Newby was also assigned to the Summit Lookout. From 1964 to 1971 he served in the Orange Ranger Unit as a Firefighter and Fire Apparatus Engineer. Following his time with the Orange Ranger Unit, BC Newby promoted to HFEO at the Oak Glen Conservation Camp in the Riverside Ranger Unit from 1971 to 1972. From 1972 to 1974, BC Newby served as a Fire Captain at the Oak GlenConservation Camp. He transferred to the Ryan Air Attack Base and served as an ATGS from 1974 to 1977. In 1977 BC Newby transferred to Southern Operations Command Center as an OCC Captain and remained there until 1982. He transferred to the San Bernardino Ranger Unit in 1982 as a Fire Captain at the Owen’s Valley Conservation Camp until 1986. For his final assignment in 1986, he promoted to Battalion Chief 3114,Corona Battalion, in the Riverside Ranger Unit until his retirement in 1997. 

BC Newby also served the State of California as an Operations Section Chief for Incident Management Team 10 throughout his career. 

He was a steward of our land and actively worked to preserve and protect rare, threatened and endangered species while fulfilling the State’s Mission. 

Battalion Chief Boyd Newby was an invaluable resource and exemplary Firefighter for the State of California. Over the course of his 35-year career, Battalion Chief Boyd Newby’s enthusiaSsm and devotion to the Department and its resources inspired, influenced, and will forever remain in the hearts and minds of those that he worked with.

A Celebration of Life will be held on August 24, 2019 at Acheson & Graham Garden of Prayer Mortuary, 7944 Magnolia Ave Riverside, CA 92504. Service will begin at 10:00 am.The family is requesting that work response uniform be worn and in lieu of flowers, please donate to the following organizations: Eastern Sierra Conservation Corps, www.easternsierracc.org & Bodie Foundation, www.bodiefoundation.org
