Roger Douglas Helm
Roger, of Clovis, CA, died on July 21, 2014. He was born in Madera, CA on May 29, 1937. Roger began working for the California Department of Forestry in 1954 as a summer firefighter and continued his work there until his retirement in 1991 as assistant chief of this region. He was a very independent man who took pride in being able to accomplish anything he set his mind on. He was a man of few words yet highly intelligent and determined. Probably his most accomplished project was doing exhaustive research on his family genealogy. He spent countless hours researching records and interviewing people to put together an impressive history. Roger was always involved with his hobbies which included raising horses, tropical birds, goats, ducks and dogs. He collected and made guns, lapidary/jewelry and coins. Also he enjoyed scuba diving and collected many abalone. He was always building things on his farm and when he wasn’t building, he would be on his tractor working the soil, regardless of if it needed it or not. Building VW’s from the ground up took several years of his life as did running three different tree nurseries. Roger was preceded in death by his youngest son, Scott Douglas Helm. He is survived by Barbara of Clovis, his wife of 39 years; his sons, Mark Helm and wife Julie of Sanger, and Carey Jones and wife Cheryl of Clovis; grandkids, Hugo Helm and Rebecca Helm of Sanger, Dalton Jones and Tiffini Jones of Clovis, CA; sisters, Margot Sciacqua and her husband Bart of Madera, CA and Claudia Eller and her husband Dean of Fresno, CA; brother, Paul Helm and his wife Chris of Madera. A Memorial Service will be held at Peoples Church in Fresno in the Chapel on Thursday July 31, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. Gifts may be given to Tree Fresno at 3150 W.
